tip no. 5: take poi lessons :)

My interest in poi started a few years ago. For those who are unaware, “poi” is the Maori word for “ball” on a cord. It is a form of juggling where the balls are swung around the body. It can come in different shapes and sizes, and can even be made at home using regular socks and tennis balls.

I was amazed at the fire dancers in Boracay and wondered if I could do it too. Without the fire, though. The long ribbons would do perfectly fine. I wanted to take lessons so much, but I just didn’t have the time. The desire was there but I kinda forgot about it as time passed - until my sister bought a pair from Tickles, Glorietta a couple of weeks ago.

In the Philippines, there’s a group known as Planet Zips which is now regularly seen in various events. Not only do they supply pois in the country, they have a number of instructors who are teaching in Manila (and some provinces) as well. Lessons are divided into three categories: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Each category is comprised of eight ( 8 ) two-hour lessons for a set rate of Php 2,250. However, you can also opt to pay on a per class basis, where the first lesson is Php 150 and succeeding lessons are priced at Php 350. Fire zipping is also taught for interested parties over the age of 18.

For those people who don’t have the time to attend formal classes, there are a lot of tutorials available on the web. YouTube is one such source. You would really have to practice though, as some moves are kind of difficult to do. Learning poi or anything new in particular is a productive distraction and will help you keep your mind off that asshole who broke your heart - even for a while. :)
